Privacy Policy

Version 2026-07-05 · Stepaside Studios (ABN 92 984 645 926)
This policy is aligned with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Australian Privacy Principles) and the direction of the OAIC's Children's Online Privacy Code. It is being finalised with legal review before public launch.

1. Who we are

Stepaside Studios (ABN 92 984 645 926) operates the Stepaside app — a private community app for our dance studio used by studio admins, teachers, parents/guardians and dancers. Because many of our members are children, we handle personal information carefully and design the app with the best interests of the child in mind.

2. Privacy contact

Our Privacy Officer handles privacy questions, access/correction requests and complaints. Email: office@stepaside.com.au. Post: Level 1, 1003 Victoria Rd, West Ryde NSW 2114. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

3. What we collect

4. How and when we collect it

Directly from you when you sign up, edit your profile, add a dancer, or post content. For under-16 dancers, a parent/guardian sets up the account and consents on their behalf — under-16s cannot create their own account. We also receive information from studio staff who manage classes and approvals.

5. Why we collect it

To run the studio community: managing enrolments and classes, sending announcements and reminders, enabling messaging between the studio and families, and organising events and competitions. We only collect what is reasonably necessary.

6. Consent (and children)

We rely on consent that is voluntary, informed, current and specific. For dancers under 15, a parent or guardian provides consent on their behalf, and the dancer is told when a parent manages their information. From age 15, a dancer can manage their own privacy consent in the app (with their parent/guardian still able to see and assist). At 18 a dancer becomes an independent adult account: any consent a parent previously gave no longer applies, and we ask the young adult to review and confirm their own settings. You can withdraw consent at any time in the app under Privacy & data.

7. Photos and videos

Photos and videos of an identifiable person are personal information. Displaying a dancer's image in the studio community feed, or using it in studio marketing, requires separate, specific consent controlled per dancer — by the parent/guardian while the dancer is under 15, and by the dancer themselves from age 15. These are off by default and can be turned on or off at any time.

8. Who we share it with

Only within your studio — teachers, studio admins, and a dancer's own parent/guardian. Mobile numbers are visible to admins only (and teachers only if the studio enables it). We use Google Firebase to host the app, and Sentry to detect app crashes/errors (configured not to collect personal information). We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or third-party analytics.

9. Where your data is stored (overseas disclosure)

Your data is stored in Australia (Google Firebase, Sydney region). Google is a global provider; while our data is stored in the Sydney region, some limited support or processing may occur outside Australia under their contractual protections.

10. Direct marketing

Operational messages (class changes, schedules, approvals) are part of the service. Optional marketing/promotional messages are separate and opt-in — off by default — and you can opt out at any time.

11. How we keep it secure

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access is restricted by role, and admin actions on member records are limited to authorised staff and recorded in an audit log.

12. Keeping and deleting data

We keep personal information only as long as needed to run the studio. We keep a dancer's date of birth only while they are under 18, and delete it automatically when they turn 18. You (or a parent on a child's behalf) can request deletion of an account and its data in the app under Privacy & data, or via our account deletion page.

13. Access and correction

You can view and edit your profile in the app, and download a copy of your information under Privacy & data. To correct information you cannot edit yourself, contact our Privacy Officer.

14. Data breaches

We comply with the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme. If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected people and the OAIC as required.

15. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will update the version and ask you to review and accept again. The current version and date are shown at the top of this policy.
